KIDS & TEENS

Catalyst Junior Varsity (8-12)

We are professional coaches. Our job is to build athletes.

Our fitness is broad–we place equal emphasis on speed, strength, agility, flexibility, stamina and balance–and we keep things fun. Kids and teens WANT to come to Catalyst, and it shows.

The new “Varsity Sport” class includes elements of high-level fitness, leadership and a small amount of public speaking.

Our workouts are made to be skill-based, challenging and progressive.

Kids in our Junior Varsity (8-12) program can “graduate” up to Senior Varsity (13-17) by completing three levels of testing. And kids in Senior Varsity can move up to Varsity Sport after a year and other testing.

Most don’t care to move up early, and that’s fine; but for those who do, levels testing serves as a “belt system” that rewards excellence in movement. Not speed, not strength, but proficiency.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30pm (OR Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30pm), Saturdays at 10am

Using a combination of calisthenics, running, rowing, jumping, throwing, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing and lifting (the stuff we all used to call ‘play,’) we get kids to LOVE exercise.  We use age-appropriate skills, challenges, and loads.  We challenge kids in a fun and progressive way, and our groups are usually filled to capacity within hours of being offered.

Our groups produce athletes – even youth athletes- that have a wide skillset; are excellent at everything without specializing at a particular sport; and enjoy movement for its own sake.  In an inclusive atmosphere, workouts are ‘scaled’: kids and teens do challenges that are appropriate for their current level and age.  They participate as a group of individuals.  They learn trust, cohesion, self-accountability, and confidence unlike anything we’ve ever seen elsewhere.

A typical group looks like this:

1) Team-based warmup

2) skill development (for instance, a handstand, or a pullup, or a rope climb, or a kettlebell swing)

3) An individual challenge (for example, an obstacle course or series of exercises against the clock.)

4) cooldown and review.

Most common question from the kids: “Can we stay extra long and try climbing the rope again?”  Most common comment from adults: “I wish I’d had this when I was a kid!”  Most common comment from coaches: “We CAN’T believe the improvement in Jimmy’s play.”  Most common comment from teachers: “Can you come to OUR school and get our kids paying attention like you do at the gym?”

Catalyst Junior Varsity follows the philosophies and practices of CrossFit Kids. You can read more about CrossFit Kids here.

Catalyst Varsity (13-17)

Catalyst Varsity: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm, Saturdays at 11am.

Varsity prepares teens for all-around athleticism. They get stronger, faster, more powerful, and more flexible. They learn about performance nutrition, and get set up to be an ‘athlete for life,’ whether within CrossFit, another sport, or just a fitter adult.

Varsity also delivers valuable lessons about life: hard work, character, courage and overcoming adversity. Many call it “the sport for kids who don’t play sports,” because it’s also fun. John Ratey, author of Spark! and brain researcher at Harvard, referred to CrossFit Kids programs as ‘collaborative competition,’ because kids cheer for one another.

Varsity Sport

VARSITY SPORT: Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30pm, Saturdays at 11am.

CrossFit is the Sport of Fitness.

Four times per year, the Teen Gauntlet event challenges teens from all over the world to individual competitions. We also do individual and Team competitions at Catalyst every few months.

Varsity Sport athletes are also encouraged to pursue leadership roles: assisting with Junior Varsity classes as coaches, public speaking, demonstrating movement, and helping Ignite clients integrate into fitness programs.

Varsity Sport requires a minimum of one year in the Varsity program, as well as demonstrated proficiency in several movements. Athletes will develop a high level of metabolic conditioning as well as movement skills while under load or fatigue. This group is not for everyone: it’s a different focus, but not necessarily the most appropriate path for every athlete.
