What Your Fitness Tracker Is Getting Wrong

Nearly half of all adults now own a fitness tracker or smartwatch. Most people who have one are using it to make real decisions — when to push, when to rest, whether today is even worth showing up.

There’s just one problem. Some of the most important numbers on that screen are significantly less accurate than the device is letting on. And those numbers are being used, every day, to make the wrong call.


What Trackers Actually Get Right

Let’s start fair, because these devices aren’t useless.

Heart rate monitoring during exercise is reasonably accurate. Research shows wrist-based tracking has a mean error of around 1 to 7 percent at moderate to vigorous intensities — good enough to give you a genuine sense of how hard you’re working.

Sleep quantity — how long you slept — is also reasonably reliable. Wearables are decent at distinguishing sleep from wakefulness, and tracking your total sleep time over weeks gives you genuinely useful information.

And trend data over time is probably the most valuable thing these devices produce. If your resting heart rate drops by five beats per minute over three months of consistent training, that’s a real signal. If your average sleep duration creeps up from six hours to seven, that matters. Trends tell you things a single day’s reading cannot.

So: heart rate during exercise, sleep duration, and long-term trends. Worth paying attention to.

Now here’s where it falls apart.


The Calorie Problem

The single biggest inaccuracy your fitness tracker delivers every day is the calorie burn estimate.

Research has consistently found that wrist-worn devices dramatically overestimate energy expenditure. One study found the Apple Watch overestimated calorie burn by an average of 115 percent in some conditions — meaning it was showing people roughly twice what they actually burned. Other research found errors ranging from 30 to 155 percent across different exercise types and intensities.

That’s not a rounding error. If your watch says your 45-minute workout burned 500 calories, reality is probably somewhere between 200 and 350.

This matters because a lot of people use that number to make food decisions. They train, look at the watch, feel like they’ve earned a meaningful caloric reward — and eat accordingly. Then they wonder why they’re not losing weight despite exercising regularly.

The calorie readout is the flashiest number on the screen and also the least accurate. If you’re tracking calories burned at all, cut the number in half and you’ll be closer to reality. Better yet — don’t use it to justify what you eat.


The Recovery Score Problem

This is where the most damage gets done — particularly for beginners.

HRV stands for heart rate variability — the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV generally indicates your parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) nervous system is active. Lower HRV suggests your sympathetic system is dominant — stress, fatigue, or accumulated strain.

It’s a legitimate biomarker. The science behind HRV is real, and Whoop’s wrist-based measurement has been validated against gold-standard ECG readings. The problem isn’t that HRV is a made-up number. The problem is how recovery scores built from HRV are being used — and how noisy and context-dependent that signal actually is.

What affects your morning HRV reading: alcohol the night before. Hydration status. Room temperature while you slept. Emotional stress — a difficult work situation, financial worry, an argument. Menstrual cycle. Even what time you woke up.

A 2025 study from the University of Jyväskylä found that while recovery metrics improved during a dedicated recovery week as expected, the correlation between a single day’s recovery score and next-day exercise performance was weak at the individual level. One red morning doesn’t reliably predict a bad workout.

And yet people are treating these scores as binary on/off switches. Red day — skip the gym. Green day — train hard. That’s not what the research supports.

What the research does support: HRV-guided training works when you use trend data over multiple days or weeks, not as a daily permission slip. A single low reading is noise. Five consecutive low readings after a hard training block might be a signal worth heeding.

But the deeper problem — the one that shows up every week in coaching — is this: for someone still building the habit of consistent training, the most important thing by far is showing up. Consistency beats optimization every time at that stage. Using a red recovery score as a reason not to go to the gym means a proprietary algorithm made by a subscription company is overriding the one behaviour that will actually change your health long-term.

Your device doesn’t know you stayed up watching TV. It doesn’t know you’re stressed about work. It doesn’t know that what you need today is the mood boost, the sense of accomplishment, and the community that comes from showing up anyway. Your coach knows that. The watch does not.


Three Ways to Use Your Tracker More Effectively

1. Use trend data, not daily scores. Look at resting heart rate and HRV over weeks, not days. A single red morning isn’t a reason to skip training. A week of consistently poor recovery alongside disrupted sleep and high stress — that’s worth a conversation with your coach about training load.

2. Never use your tracker to justify skipping a workout you know you should do. Especially in your first year of training, the habit of showing up is worth more than perfect recovery optimization. Go, lower the intensity if you need to, do something. You decide — not the device.

3. Stop eating back your calorie burn. The estimate is off by 30 to over 100 percent. Use your device to track trends and activity minutes, not to calculate a food reward after every session.


The Bottom Line

Fitness trackers do some things well — heart rate during exercise, sleep duration, and long-term trend data. Where they let you down: calorie estimates that can be off by more than 100 percent, and recovery scores that translate a noisy, highly individual signal into a simple traffic light.

Use them as one data point among many. Not as your coach.
