Why I Started Catalyst Fitness

I wasn’t an athlete in high school. I was a nerd.

I wasn’t good at sports; didn’t have much self-confidence; and would probably have chosen playing video games over going to a party with friends on a Friday night.

If you’d told that skinny, introverted kid that he’d be speaking to thousands of people from stage; own multiple businesses; and write to 40,000 readers every day…he’d have thought you were nuts.

The road from there to here started with a simple question:
“Wanna see if the weight room is open?”

I had a weird lunch hour – from 10am until 11am. Only a few other seniors had the same break time. Bored, one suggested that we poke around the school weight room – a windowless dungeon containing a weight stack from the 1970s and some busted up equipment that people had donated from their unused home gyms.

I went along to fit in.

We had no idea what we were doing. We screwed around; we tried stuff; we probably broke the machines. BUT…
I started to get stronger anyway.
I started to grow a tiny bit of muscle.
My lingering zits went away.
My posture got better.
I started looking people in the eye when I spoke to them.
I started speaking to them more often.
I started talking to girls (what?!)
I even asked my all-time, outta-my-league, girl to the prom. (She’s been my wife for 20 years now.)
