You’re The Average of the 5 People Closest To You.

After nearly 30 years as a fitness coach and 20 years as a gym owner, I can tell you definitively: the number one predictor of whether someone will succeed long-term isn’t motivation, discipline, or even genetics.

It’s whether they can surround themselves with people moving in the same direction.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Not just in business or income – in health, stress levels, eating habits, and lifestyle choices.

This creates a challenge: when you decide to get healthier, you’re often the only one in your immediate circle making that change. Your spouse is still stressed and sedentary. Your coworkers are still ordering takeout every day. Your friends are still drinking every weekend.

You can’t force people to change. But you CAN change the people around you by inviting them into your world.

The data backs this up:

  • When a spouse joins a fitness program, household health markers improve across the board
  • Workplace wellness participation increases when colleagues participate together
  • Long-term adherence rates are 3-4x higher when people train with partners or groups

At Catalyst Fitness, we’re hosting our “Bring a Friend” event February 6-7 – our only spring opportunity for members to invite guests. We don’t do drop-ins or free trials because effective coaching requires context and customization. But sometimes people need to experience it firsthand.

Beyond gym invitations, here are four evidence-based strategies for encouraging lifestyle change in your circle:

  1. Start with low-barrier activities – Walking, not workouts. Remove performance anxiety.
  2. Share outcomes, not methods – “I sleep better” resonates more than “I do kettlebell swings.”
  3. Pair fitness with existing social activities – Make it about connection, not exercise.
  4. Model consistency without evangelizing – Sustainable behavior change is contagious when it’s authentic.

The reality is that individual health exists within a social ecosystem. If you want to create lasting change, you need to think beyond personal discipline and consider environmental factors.

Who’s in your circle? And more importantly, who could you invite in?
