Personal Training
If you're generous enough to give us five minutes, you'll read about a lot of cool stuff we do at Catalyst.
If you see something you like, we'll ask for another 30 minutes – just to chat. No charge, no commitment. Easier than a first date, even. And if you think Personal Training is for you, great! We've been helping people achieve their individual goals for 13 years, and our success is obvious in the smiles (and beltlines) of our clients!
Fight On Friday is one of our most popular events of the year. Made famous by BJ Penn (an original CrossFitter and UFC star,) it's 17 minutes of quad-burning, row-hating, ball-throwing, triceps-failing, "I'm doing it! I'm doing it!"

Murph 2011 Results
Another PERFECT day for Murph! This year, counting the Youth, we had 65 competitors (a record!) If you missed it, our annual Murph competition is:
1 mile run – 100 pullups – 200 pushups – 300 squats – 1 mile run….for time.
Winners: Female – Lisa Proctor Male – Cam Wilson
The males category was especially tight, with half a dozen competitors within 2 minutes of the leader; luckily, his opening run of a 5:38 mile put him out front to stay.
Guts award goes to the SuperTimids – the 7am crew! Wearing capes and "ST" on their chests, they hammered through for a bunch of first-time finishes. We're perhaps most proud of them. But the Youth group gets honourable mention: EVERY ONE of them requested to do the FULL Murph, not just the half that we'd chosen. Wow. And not a boy in sight….
Beginner Run Group
What's the best way to start running?
Well, you want to do it without hurting yourself. We coach the POSE method – saves your knees, makes you faster, and helps you go further on less energy.
You want to do it with a group of like-minded people. If you're learning, you don't really want a marathoner in your group…right?
You want to have fun. How about a group where you look forward to attending every week?
This is it.
Awesome folks, great coach, short distance. Learn to run; learn to run better; run to get in shape; run to get out of the house!

Youth Groups – Catalyst Kids, Jiu-Jitsu, and Rumble/Tumble
What happens when you take a kid and teach them to move better? First, they get better at somersaults. Then, they get a bit stronger; a bit faster; they work harder. They experience success in the physical realm, and that spreads. Soon, they're more confident; they're laughing at class; they're wiping away sweat and grinning while they work.
You wonder how to instill a work ethic in your kids? You're desparate to help your kid get over shyness, or help them get better for a sport, or start something brand new?
The answer: a combination of gymnastics, tumbling, running, weightlifting, and calisthenics. If they're a bit older, add in some mano-a-mano challenges. Teach them to defend themselves; to wrestle; to strive. Teach them to love exercise.
Jiu-Jitsu: Classes are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4:30pm; Open Roll on Saturdays at 11am.
Catalyst Kids: Classes are Tuesdays at 7 OR Wednesdays at 7, and Saturday mornings at 10am.
Rumble/Tumble: Classes are Saturday mornings at 9am.
Rates and signup information are here, but if you're tired of reading already, just call. 705-256-1344. Coach: Mitch Fryia.
OnRamp
There was a LOT to see at Murph, and to a beginner, it can be pretty overwhelming: nearly 70 people embarking on this ridiculous workout. Most didn't know each other before they met. Here, in this gym, they were introduced to CrossFit and to each other. Slowly, over the years, we've molded into a Family. Someday you, too, will be part of this; but first comes OnRamp.
OnRamp is our gateway into CrossFit. It's a group dedicated to building your movement skills – from squats to pushups to snatches and cleans and pullups. You'll learn it all. And after three weeks, you'll be ready for anything.
Register for OnRamp – Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday nights at 6pm; Saturday mornings at 8am. You bring the Woman (or Man,) we'll provide the Super.

V02 Testing
Catalyst has teamed up with Sault College's Exercise Lab to deliver the ONLY source of V02 testing in Sault Ste. Marie!
What's the V02 test? Read more about it here. What's the value? Well, if we know exactly how much oxygen you're taking in and putting out during very intense exercise, we can better program your workouts for you. And with this precise measurement technique, we can measure progress to make sure you're on the best track possible!
More details to come. In the meantime, you can call us: 705-256-1344 and we'll get you set up to test!
ALL of our hockey, football, soccer and other sports programs this summer will utilize V02 testing!
Catalyst and Sault College will be your sole provider of this high-tech technology in Sault Ste. Marie this summer!
RMT Search
In some bittersweet news, Jo Ann will be leaving the Sault on June 1st. While we can't replace a talent like Jo, we're launching a joint campaign to find the best Massage Therapist out there. Jo is currently trying new RMTs, and Chris is meeting RMTs who want to practice at Catalyst. She's built a huge practice of loyal fans over the last 6 years, and been an integral part of our injury diagnosis and prevention team…and just plain fun to be around. She'll be missed.
In the meantime, if you're an RMT or know an RMT who would like to be part of an amazing opportunity, call Chris: 705-256-1344.
CrossFit Open Update
The 2011 CrossFit Games got rolling in March. There were a few technical glitches on the site, and so the first event (30 double-unders, 15 snatches, AMRAP in 10:00) was extended for an extra week. Next Tuesday night, though, we'll finally get WOD #2, and the Green Army train will keep plowing forward!
Currently, we have athletes in the Top 20 in the Mens', Womens' and several Masters categories (Team standings aren't working yet, sadly.) You can stay up-to-date and cheer, comment, and critique online at the 2011 CrossFit Open site. Go Green Army!
Ignite Goes Online
The Ignite! phenomenon never ceases to amaze. We've never advertised Ignite!. We've never asked anyone to attend. And yet…insurance companies now recognize Ignite! as a valuable part of treatment. School boards are excited to include it in the curriculum. Other therapists are asking to incorporate Ignite! into their own modality. And, this week: two requests to provide Ignite! therapy online, as far away as Florida. We're working on it (at 4am – what else would be be doing?!?) The important part: Ignite! is exploding because it WORKS. Parents tell parents. Kids tell kids. Patients tell their therapists…

If we're guilty of one bad habit, it's lack of sleep. But here's what happens: we get a call on Monday morning, requesting a service that we planned to offer in 2012. "Can we start Friday?" "Absolutely!" And so, at 4:30am, we're setting up computers, or mopping floors, or posting about meeting lawyers. And it always works out. For some reason, when we work harder than anyone else, we make out fine. Maybe there's a lesson in there somewhere….or maybe we're just the luckiest group of people in the Universe. Either way, we're grateful, and we know that the people reading this newsletter faithfully are also the ones who are REALLY building this place. So, thanks. We're building a community here, not a gym…..
