We promised a barn-burner…and the Catalyst family (and friends) delivered.
Event #1 featured a gorgeous introduction to the new Hub Trail for most competitors. The bridges shook – but held – when 80 people did squats on them. The concrete pad was covered in gasping bodies for nearly a full 15 minutes at the end of the run….and then Event #2 happened.
You can see, in pictures, the electricity of the crowd. The LSSU teams showed off their prowess in Olympic Lifting skill, easily handling more than their respective bodyweights in most cases, but Vance Henson pulled 275 all the way up to the roof to take it. Jeremy Paquin had a 20lbs PR to keep him in the Top 3, and Lisa and Mel Rose tied at 155 (both with close misses at 175) in the Clean Ladder.
Event #3 was a shock, even to the referees. Our time: 4:14. So when Drew finished in 2:38, we thought his time would stand. And it did…until Cam tied him, and then Jeremy beat them both in a stagger across the finish line, truck in front of him. Event #3, though, is where Sally Moore really started to show that she was out for the title, in a time that NO ONE could touch!
Event #4, "Kerannie," was intimidating even for the veterans. It's really almost three full CrossFit workouts in one, and we forecast that a good time would be around the 18-minute mark. So when Steve Leroux did it in 16:00 flat – in second place! – the coaches exchanged some LOOKS. And when Sally started the wall ball portion 25 reps behind Mel, and caught up to within ONE rep…well, we went nuts.
Winners:
1st overall: Cam Wilson, Sally Moore, team LSSU
2nd overall: Jeremy Paquin, Melanie Rose, LSSU2
3rd overall: Steve Leroux, Lisa Proctor, and…whatever Gartshore's team was calling itself.

For the first time, Catalyst has coordinated with the John Rhodes Pool – the greatest indoor swim venue in Northern Ontario – to put together a comprehensive program featuring three disciplines that endurance athletes love: Running. Ignite! 10-week Enrichment Camp –

As our culture moves toward building up the underdog, it's sometimes true that the high achievers – or those only needing a LITTLE help – get overlooked.

The brand-new Ignite! Academy features 600 square feet of classroom space – covered with matted flooring, medicine balls, chalk drawings, plyo boxes….

We've successfully implemented Ignite! in school classes to demonstrate that kids who move more tend to learn better. NOW, we're offering parents the chance to give their kids a boost – the Enrichment Program.

Each week, students do a short warmup; learn a skill, like focusing, that will help with ANY class; discuss ways of improving in subjects like math and english; do a comprehensive challenge; and do a workout, to make the lesson stick. It's brilliant.

Catalyst Varsity

The Varsity program is our Youth program: kids get better at any sport by practicing running, sprinting, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, gymnastics, plyometrics, tumbling…all rolled up into an hour of learning that culminates in a tough "challenge."

Varsity – Ages 12-16 – Tuesdays at 4:30; Thursdays at 7; Saturdays at 10am. Come to all 3 groups, every week, for fifty bucks! Teens LOVE our new facility, with 1500sq feet of mat space, new gymnastics toys, and a LOT more variety!

Junior Varsity – Ages 8-12. Same times and rates as Varsity, scaled workouts and skills for the younger set.

Rumble/Tumble – Ages 3-8. Saturday mornings at 9am. Kids learn the basics of movement – which will help them play ANY sport better later in life – in a fun, colourful group.

In a month where I'm usually choked out of a voice by all the yelling/cheering at the Catalyst Games, I had mine taken away in several other ways: Jiu-Jitsu, and also the uncommon generosity of some members toward others.
