October 2010Personal Training
This newsletter has information on tons of great groups and events, but we're at our best when we're personal trainers. Want to talk about it? No pressure, and no charge. Let's hang out for a half hour: just find a time by clicking here.

Change is good for you. On September 11, 53 took up the gauntlet, faced down the Lizard Brain, and simply DID. They let their bodies lead and their brains follow. If we don't continually challenge our beliefs, we'll never grow; dismissing new ideas without consideration imprisons us in ignorance. TRY eating a no-grain diet; TRY OnRamp; TRY FranFest, or Enduro, or Ignite, or Bettys, or Ninjas. Our success in the world is limited only by our capacity to listen and TRY new ideas. There's no failure as long as you're learning.

Tyler's new program, Ignite, combines the research behind BrainGym with the fun of CrossFit to help folks learn better. He's got kids reading better, moving better, focusing…it's almost too huge to describe. So instead, I'd rather tell this story:
Three weeks ago, a young man of 15 visited Tyler, referred by his physiotherapist. On the first day, his cognitive skills wouldn't let him coordinate a simple squat without falling forward. Tyler did some exercises to link the left and right brain better, and he picked it up. He went home with a smiling mom. But two days later, she was in tears, describing what happened after the session: the teenager started his math work for the day (he's homeschooled for now.) He scored a 0 out of 10. Rather than let him become frustrated and unfocused, his mom tried Tyler's focusing technique….and was rewarded with a 10 out of 10, five minutes later.
Two days ago, a kid who couldn't do a simple squat on September 1 was teaching me how to juggle one-handed. "You just have to focus better," he said. "Stick with it. You'll eventually get it."
Ignite is a program based on science; it starts from research, but usually ends in emotion. Our biggest hurdle now is describing how well it works to people who have heard all the promises before. Therapists and teachers are already including it in their curriculum, less than three weeks after we started using the knowledge gained over years of study. See for yourself: this is Ignite. This is Ignite's facebook page.

October OnRamp

OnRamp is a starting line. If you're interested in CrossFit, OnRamp is the sampler platter. If you're trying to get started in fitness, OnRamp is a habit-former AND an intro course. If you're just trying to find your way, or try something new, OnRamp gives you a solid foundation on which to try – and do better at – a wide variety of different things.

OnOctober 11, Coach Whit and crew will take you farther in 15 days than most travel in a year.

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 6pm; Saturday mornings at 8am. A small-group setting, expert instruction from one of the best coaches in Canada. Folks just like you. Register here – OnRamp fills every time!

Enduro – the new Catalyst training program for the ENDURANCE ATHLETE!

If you haven't seen the CrossFit Endurance training program before, invest ten minutes and learn. Science is revealing better, faster, more efficient ways to run and train for endurance sports – and the time commitment is MUCH less. Fewer injuries, faster times, less pain, less time….it's all waiting for you if you're willing to challenge the old paradigm of 'more is better.' POSE running, anaerobic training, and CrossFit have changed all that, making better, faster runners in MUCH less time, and without injury.

This fall, Mike will lead a private group for endurance athletes – swimmers, bikers, runners, skiers, rowers – who are willing to leave their comfort zone and get faster. You can see his sample workouts now on endurowod.com…but don't wait! The site will be password-protected for members only after Oct. 1!

The details:

Monday Nights- Group Cycle/Row (indoor)

Thursdays – Group Run

Other assignments: you'll be given a password for the new Catalyst Endurance site. You'll receive daily workout assignments, and post your times for the other group members to see.

You'll also get endurance-specific articles, essays, and knowledge from coach Mike Watson, BHK, CSCS, CrossFit Endurance Certified Trainer.

BEST PART OF ALL: by enrolling in a monthly program, you're getting better value (each class costs you less!), better adherence, and better long-term results! Good for you!

Catalyst Games 2010

…changed my life…" "….best thing I've ever done…" "….every single bump and drop of sweat was worth it…." It was a day on which the world pivoted for many. 53 competitors, over 100 fans, a gorgeous waterfront setting, PRs all over the place. Many heart-squeezing moments (it's rumoured that Coop choked up a bit during the awards ceremony…)
In the end, the Teachers took it. Cam Wilson won the overall Mens' Rx division by a point over Brent Rose and long-traveler Steve Leroux. Mel Rose took the Womens' Rx division by a point over Lisa Proctor and home-grown Jo Ann Bailey. EVERY event was dramatic; every second a highlight. There's more to remember here. Final standings are HERE. Thank you, everyone. See you at FranFest Nov 20!

Tuesdays at 7pm – Level 1 – emphasis on calisthenics, running, tumbling, and some easy gymnastics

Wednesdays at 7pm – Level II – an introduction to weightlifting skills, combined with more moderate gymnastics, running, sprinting, and plyometrics. Register online here – these classes always sell out!

Few people realize it, but October 2010 is our fifth anniversary. When we started out, in tiny offices above a stationery store, banks and lenders were quick to remind us that most businesses fail in their first five years. In the fitness industry, we've noticed that most fail in their first twelve months. We've been extremely lucky with clients who bring their friends; landlords who are sympathetic to our cause; and staff who are willing to go far beyond what could reasonably be expected from them.
Most businesses, at the 5-year mark, are taping balloons to the wall. I don't think we've hit our goal yet; our potential is still beyond us. Ignite is a terrific example: we've been researching cognitive exercise for years, and only NOW are we able to offer a comprehensive program. Consider the other stuff we're studying, and you'll see why I don't yet think we're at our cruising altitude. Thanks for being on this flight with us.

-Chris
