From the Globe and Mail: Canada To Ease Physical Fitness Guidelines. Despite years of research – evidence-based AND anecdotal, as well as overwhelming empirical evidence – the government takes a large step backward.

Why should you care? Because these blanket recommendations will change the way your doctor tells your family – incorrectly – what's necessary to lose weight and be healthy. These are the recommendations against which we'll be arguing for the next decade. These are the low standards against which you'll be measured by insurance companies; which will prop up the 'tut-tutting' czars of the "don't overdo it!" culture that we're fostering in our smooth slide to the bottom. On the same day that the Canadian Juniors rise against the favourites, throwing their bodies on the line over and over again, after defeating the Americans on Monday, our healthcare bureaucrats decide that the way to make the populace healthier is not through their inspiration, or your perspiration….but by broadening the definition. How embarrassing.

This is CrossFit's early discussion on the Health – Wellness – Fitness continuum.

If there's a bright side, it's that no one in the population can actually use these 'recommendations' to form long-term change. Change requires clear goals, Bright Spots, and an objective measurability. Apply the template we discussed in How To Change to the new Fitness Guidelines, or the Canada Food Guide. Can't do it? We'll do it for you. Stay tuned tomorrow as we compare the Zone Diet and CrossFit's "Fitness In 100 Words" to Canada's Fitness Guidelines and Canada Food Guide, and their respective abilities to affect change…..
