Growing into history:
In 2008, the Catalyst Games had a pretty short roster. We had three events: bodyweight bench press/truck pull; max deadlift; and Murph. Of the 13 athletes participating, six were Coaches. The day saw Ty's first 500lbs deadlift; several 50m truck pulls in under 20 seconds; and Anna.
It was a very hot day, full of humidity, and the air wasn't moving at all. The athletes were tired before Murph started, and back then, the mere thought of Murph was nerve-wracking for EVERYONE. Survival was the goal.
With 20m to go at the end of Murph, Anna was slowly catching up to Matt Keating. And then, head down, she sprinted….and pulled ahead at the door.
Yesterday, she finally had her comeuppance: in the fourth round, Josh (her son, who was only 8 years old at CGO8) sprinted ahead to take her at the door. He grinned to himself for the next round, and I reminded her of her due.
Another interesting group: The KL-7 are 'memory athletes.' To belong to the secret society, you have to meet the following challenge (reminiscent of CrossFit):
Drink 2 Beer
Kiss 3 Women
Memorize the order of a deck of playing cards.
Any order. 5 minute time cap.
An essay about the KL7 and memory sport, from the New York Times, is here (the full book is called, Moonwalking With Einstein.)
Today at noon: the Green Army has their final attempts at CrossFit Open Event #3. Currently ranked first in Canada on this event, the Army is going to have to bust it to keep their amazing ranking! THAT, my friends, will require a LOT of yelling…..5 minutes is a long time to be alone with a bar.
