Two guys are hiking in northern California (true story.) Suddenly, they're startled by a loud noise in the brush: it's apparent that a big, mean California Grizzly is heading straight for them! There's nowhere to hide; nothing to climb; no stream into which to jump. One guy starts running, but stops when he notices the other bending over instead. He turns and sees his partner tying his shoes. "Are you nuts!?!?! Forget about your shoes! Get running!" The second guy says, as he ties the other shoe, "I don't have to outrun the bear, brother. Just gotta outrun YOU."

A year ago around this time, we were waiting anxiously for Paul McIntyre to fix his overhead projector. We'd done the first three events at CrossFit Sectionals, and wanted to get back to the hotel to eat and sleep. After 20 minutes of nervous shuffling by 93 competitors, he finally revealed a Chipper so tough that most immediately wrote themselves off.

"Muscle-ups? I've never done ONE!" "That snatch weight is more than my PR!" "I can't even do that many double-unders!!!"

It became clear, very early, that everyone was nervous. Especially when Paul announced the time cap: 20 minutes. It was, simply, not much time.

When you're in a room like that, you can immediately see the responses of others. When you're online, you don't. But rest assured that everyone else, faced with the same dilemma as you are, feels the same way. Today, there are almost TEN THOUSAND women worried about muscle-ups worldwide. And by Sunday night, there will be more female first-time muscle-ups than there have ever been in a single week in the history of the world.

It's obvious that there will be a LOT of ties this week. There will be a logjam of people at every single rep. More than any other event we've done, EVERY REP will make a huge difference. If you can get 10 reps on the overhead squat, you'll leave behind the hundreds who can achieve only nine. If you can get one muscle-up, you'll leave a thousand on the ground beneath you. Try hard. You don't have to outrun the bear.
