Great weekend all around: we raised $840 for our Relay For Life team, the "Green Army," at our 5k midnight run. Then on Saturday, Philsy and Matt hammered the Northern Cup Strongman. On Sunday, Catalyst racers crushed PRs all over the Downtown at Run The Great Lakes!
This summer, six Apprentices will be conducting studies on different aspects of fitness. They'll be kept informal, but the subjects chosen are all very interesting ones. This is our first Apprentice appeal for research subjects. Charity Henson needs volunteers to test the effects of grains on performance:
Go Against the Grain
Back in January many of you participated in a grain free month. As many of you quickly found out, it is not an easy diet to follow. I am doing a research project this summer to test whether going grain free makes a difference in our daily lives.
Some people believe that our bodies are not capable of digesting grains in a way that will not harm our digestive system. Other people believe that our bodies do not have a problem digesting grains. The opinions are widely varied and not enough research has been done to determine who is right. Doctors are only now just starting to understand gluten intolerances and allergies. Many people do not know they have a problem digesting grains until they completely cut grains out of their diet. One has to wonder with the rate of celiac disease rising, is it possible that grains are doing us more harm than good.
Those who agree to participate in this research project will once again be asked to go a whole month completely grain free. You will be provided with a list of foods that you will not be allowed to eat for the four weeks. You will also participate in a few tests at the beginning of the month, and again at the end of the month. You will be asked to keep track of how you feel during your workouts and throughout your work day. It will be a long month that will take self discipline and perseverance. Will you go against the grain?
