In conversation with a manufacturer of Olympic barbells two weeks ago, I mentioned that CrossFit was "saving" Olympic lifting (the Clean and Jerk and Snatch.) He disagreed. But consider this: in 2010, approximately 200,000 people will do their first Clean – probably with a medicine ball – in CrossFit. Weightlifting clubs will shrink. Back in 2004, Greg Glassman commented that the problem with Weightlifting in the USA was that no one "had any passion about the sport." One could find the minutes from their annual meeting on the USAW website, but no explanation of the lifts; no discussion; no love. Today, it seems that the USAW is finally listening: they've announced a new type of competition (the first change since the Press was banned in the 1970s) : The CrossFit / USA Weightlifting Open. Maybe the same can happen for gymnastics?
