Kettlebells are starting to become trendy.  Yuck. Time for…Jillian "The Biggest Loser" Michaels to release her kettlebell DVD! But wait! She, um, doesn't know how to use them?!?

A common misconception with kettlebells: that they don't 'isolate' muscles, and are therefore not effective for "toning." That's correct. The role of kettlebells is to promote rapid hip extension and explosive movement. We use them in CrossFit because they're excellent at promoting work at very high intensity (every 'swing' you take, you're doing the Valsalva manoeuvre.) High-intensity intervals are terrific for fat loss and the promotion of real fitness. Intramuscular coordination is also a beautiful thing. Thus, they're part of our toolkit. Purists use them on their own.
