50 and OLDER?

As we reach our Prime, we become more aware of our bodies and the way we use them. If we over do it, we start to feel the aches and pains and our muscles soreness could last for days instead of hours like when we were young. This could lead us to think we should do less and avoid feeling uncomfortable. The tendency to avoid activity is the spiral that never ends well.

Dr. Kenneth Cooper once said “We do not stop exercising because we grow oldwe grow old because we stop exercising.”

Lack of movement and strength, coupled with the weight gain from inactivity, will result in a lifestyle that will become more and more dependent on others. Live this lifestyle long enough and it could lead to chronic disease. This can lead us down a path where our independence could be called into question.

Will you need help to get on and off the toilet when you’re older?

As we mature from child to teen to adult our muscles naturally grow until around the age of 30. In our 30’s we begin to lose muscle and muscle function; this is called Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia normally happens at a rate of 3-5% per decade, with the percentages increasing as we age. The greatest increases start at age 60 to 75. Sarcopenia causes you to become frail, which is a factor in the likelihood of a fracture from a fall.

How do we prevent the early effects of Sarcopenia?

WE EXERCISE

Daily exercise builds up the muscles that support our bones. This also helps us prevent osteoporosis (thinning of the bone). By building the support network around our bones we can actually cause our bones to strengthen and grow. Strength and endurance exercise are excellent ways to prevent sarcopenia and osteoporosis. This is also directly related to improving your sleep patterns which will boost the moods of mildly to moderately depressed individuals.
