Fitness depends on strength.
Strength requires more than lip service: pumping a 12-lb bar up and down a thousand times won’t make you strong. Peel away the lycra and bass track, and most “classes” for women have no value. That’s a strong statement, but I’m making it from a gym full of strong women.
A woman who can lift 200lbs from the floor isn’t scared to shovel snow. She isn’t afraid to fight off an attacker, or help in the hayfield.
The only reason women don’t lift weights the same way as men is fear. They’re scared of “gaining muscle,” getting bulky, appearing “big.” But we’ve shown, through research and almost 20 years of practice, that it’s simply not true. The fear is misplaced.
Women have been held down by the hands of fear before:
“Women shouldn’t vote because they’re irrational.”
“Women shouldn’t take mens’ jobs because they’re weaker.”
“Women can’t hold political office because they’re not level-headed.”
“Women shouldn’t be sent to war because they’re easier to torture.”
“Women shouldn’t lift big weights because they’ll get strong. And if they’re strong, they’ll want to be bosses instead of secretaries.”
Do you see?
To paraphrase Fran Rose, strength is a choice. Choice is the antithesis of fear.
