"Open Roll"

In addition to our regular kids classes, we've added “Open Roll” to our youth Jiu Jitsu program and open gym for our Catalyst Kids and teen groups.

Open roll is a time for our jiu jitsu students to show up and play with techniques they've learned, develop new ones and make their own style, and have fun. This is a crucial part of development in any grappling sport. Regular coaches will be on the mat, as well as a few extras.

Open gym gives the kids a chance to come in one more time every week for a class with less structure and more opportunity to explore. Your kids will still have supervision of coaches who can answer their questions and guide them in the right direction, but they'll be free to try new things, ask questions and discover.

Although the structured class each week is very important, We believe open gym time is equally important. During the structured class, there is a lot of instruction on fundamental movements and the principles behind them. Once they learn these principles, they can apply them during play and discover new techniques, games activities all on their own.

Discovery learning is valuable because it allows us to draw conclusions from principles and concepts we've already learned and solve problems using these same principles. Learning in this way builds strong connections to new discoveries, helps in the development of creative thinking and teaches us to problem solve.

Starting in March, Open Gym is 10-11am (downtown) and Open Mat for Jiu Jitsu is 11am-12pm (also downtown.) Regular Catalyst kids programs continue Tuesdays Downtown at 7pm, and Wednesdays 7pm at the park.
