Colds and Sugar by Carolle Robinson

You have that threatening tickly throat and itchy nose. 'Tis the season, and with the hustle and bustle of the upcoming festivities you DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS RIGHT NOW. You dread being a weak blob under the covers stuck in Kleenexland.  But wait. . . What if I told you: "You can reduce your risk of getting a cold by AVOIDING SUGAR LIKE THE PLAGUE."
You heard right. Turns out that sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease.  Sugar and germs make for a double-whammy against you. Pathogens abound: in shopping crowds, in closed-in spaces and even floating in the chalk dust at the gym. We're all surrounded by snifflers and coughers. I, myself, work on school computers which are known for their pristine keyboards. right!

Before coming across this neat sugar lump of info, I had a personal revelation around this time last year. After finishing a Whole30 stint on strict Paleo I went to bed one night with the hint of a cold and woke-up to the full-blown thing the next morning. I suspected it had something to do with the sweet gooey dessert reward(??) I had had the night before. I noticed the sugar/cold association specifically because several weeks of clean eating made me in-tune with how I felt. (Incidentally, the leafy green vegetables, citrus fruit and Omega 3 fats that I had been eating are immunity boosters.) Since that time – knock loudly on wood – I’ve avoided getting a full-blown cold when I get the mere inkling of one trying to set up shop by being extra cautious of my diet and avoiding sugar and grains.

Although I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, it turns out there's medical evidence to back this up. You can do the research. Just google "sugar and colds".
Placebo effect notwithstanding, you can be your own guinea pig and test this stuff out. Just follow Robb Wolf's mantra of: "see how you look, feel, perform" when you attempt this. Try it – or rather. . . Don’t try sugar and see what doesn’t happen this cold season.
