There's a lot of salesmanship going on in the fitness world right now. What's the best? Constantly varied, high-intensity movement. You need variety. You need challenge. You need -well, us.

We wrote a bit more about it last night. You can read it here.

Want something more interesting to read? How about Michelle Rosso's "Get By With A Little Help From My Friends" essay:

“…get by with a little help from my friends” Joe Cocker

That was the song playing on my ipod today as I ran down second line west, trying to concentrate on running on my toes. It hit me mid stride, "a little help from my friends", well in my case "alot" of help from my friends is the sole reason I was able to be out on this awesome day worrying about running on my toes. Today is my birthday, and like everyone else I spent some time reflecting on the past year. Almost to the day, one year ago I fell going down buttermilk ski hill (embarrassing, I know), unfortunately that fall caused me to tear my MCL, ACL and lateral meniscus of my right knee. For those of you not familiar with the anatomy of our knees, that is pretty much everything that holds the knee together.

The help from my friends started from the day of my injury. One phone call and within minutes Leanne and her mother were en route, ready to take me to the hospital and take care of my son while I was there. Unfortunately the reception at the hospital was not as helpful, the emerg.doctor informed me I "bruised the pads of my knees", to this day I'm not sure what that means. Once again my friends to the rescue, Leanne approached a colleague, who made some phone calls and within 24hrs I was in the ortho clinic being assessed and very quickly diagnosed. When I asked the physician when I could run again, his response was "maybe never". I left the hospital that day in a full leg brace, walking with crutches and in complete shock. Then a wonderful little voice said to me, "I bet you can row with one leg, I'll take you to the gym tomorrow and we can try". So the next day accompanied by Leanne and Kathleen, I went to catalyst and rowed with one leg. It was difficult, and I didn't get very far, but it sparked something in my brain that made me believe there is always a way, and there are "no excuses". So I booked my first appointment with Chris and we started on our "no excuses" journey to recovery and being a runner again. There were bumps in the road; I had complications with the knee capsule, a right knee arthroscopy in March and finally the ACL repair in June but I never allowed myself to consider the possibility of not running again. At my 6 month post op appointment with the surgeon, I asked him what my chances of running a marathon were; his response was "you are getting ahead of yourself". The next day at my appointment with Chris, his response was, "you need to register for a half marathon in the spring…we can get you there!"

I am now registered in the Bayshore half marathon May 28th 2011, and with "alittle help from my friends" I am confident I will cross the finish line once again!
