Find Your Five!
It’s been said that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.
Seth Godin says, “One of the most powerful of our survival mechanisms is to be part of a tribe, to contribute to (and take from ) a group of like-minded people. We are drawn to leaders and to their ideas, and we can’t resist the rush of belonging and the thrill of the new.”
During the Ontario government’s Emergency Order to close non-essential businesses, a lot of our ‘5’ were not able to be included in the “bubble” we were asked to create. Knowing our clients at Catalyst, we were concerned about how long this would go on for.
Retention into June was starting to drop. It had already been 3 months, and the Catalyst family wasn’t participating in their usual routines – not exchanging smiles and cheers, or getting to the gym before, during or after work.
Our coaches were doing a GREAT job delivering online coaching to our clients, but the lure of social media platforms offering “free workouts” and “quick 30 day transformations” ran rampant through everyone’s news feed. Uncertainty was at a high point – no one knew that in less than 30 days we’d be back in the gym.
We are not out of this pandemic yet, but people have been venturing out and finding their ‘5’. Catalyst has been helping with that! Our previous clients are returning, and new members are coming through the doors each week. They all have different goals, but one reason is prevalent: they are looking to be around ‘their’ people again!
You feel the difference when you are at the Catalyst coaching facility in person. You’ll realize how you missed the smiles that have been masked for months – once people take their places in their workout area, the masks come off and the smiles shine bright! The camaraderie that helps push you during your workout is so inspiring! The early 6:30 am group class doesn’t seem as early when you are surrounded by your ‘5’. The after-work workout is not as tough to get to when you know that you’re heading to a place where nobody is ever going to let you fail!
The energy, the familiar sounds of the weights clanking, the barbell dropping or the rower swishing with each pull. It all contributes to that positive energy. Your coach and your ‘crew’ are encouraging you to pick up your pace on that last run, or to get that last rep – these are the voices and noises that remain constant amid the chaos.
There will be challenges ahead that you don’t want to do; that you know you need to do. Your ‘5’ will be there to support you. They are the group that cares about how you are doing and what you have to say.
