What is Jiu Jitsu – Mitch Fryia
I could answer this question a million different ways. I could tell you where it came from, its importance as a sport/martial art, or how its evolved blah blah blah. Yes that stuff IS important. To read about it go to wikipedia and type “jiu jitsu”. Its all there. I'm going to jump right past that stuff and touch on a few things that attracted me to it and sucked me in.
Jiu Jitsu is all about progression and continuous learning. Everybody will have a different starting point, and we embrace that, the goal is simply to build from there. Sound familiar? Even as a coach it is important to take pride in the fact that you are forever a student. If you forget that, you're finished, and so are your students.
Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to develop physical characteristics like speed, flexibility, strength balance and body awareness. The part that really grabbed me is the thinking side of it. It's like a chess match, the better strategy wins, but the options are endless.
The combination of physical and mental challenges, in a game based format are what make this martial art so valuable for kids, although they might think they are just “playing”.
